Drones, Hover Boards and Cars seem to be this seasons lions, tigers and bears Oh My! These gifts will more than likely make you the best gift giver of the season, but it may come at a cost to you or a claim on your insurance policy.
Let's take drones for instance. Bobby gets a drone under the tree and loves it, takes it up for a flight before knowing how to fully control the aircraft and causes damage to your neighbors home or a car passing by. This will result in a liability claim against your homeowner’s policy that can result in premium increases on your next renewal if a claim is filed. If Bobby causes damage to his home or his parent’s vehicles this may result in an out of pocket expense or auto deductible as coverage does not extend to damage caused by you or resident of the home.
Leroy get the much sought after Hover Board and as the news has repeatedly reported they contain lithium batteries that may catch fire spontaneously. Leroy and his family leave to go visit family or friends but Leroy leaves the Hover Board on in his room, the hover board catches fire and a house fire ensues and to the shock of the family upon their return to their home it is involved in a total loss fire claim. This claim would be covered but at a cost of much distress to the whole family and a lengthy claims process. It is always good to maintain a detailed inventory of ALL your personal items and belongings on a virtual cloud based location, in case access is needed in such an unfortunate scenario.
Sally just recently finished her driver education course this passed December and walks outside to the surprise of a NEW CAR! She is floored to see a big red bow on her 2015 car. She wants to take it for a drive immediately, so she grabs the keys and says she is just going around the block. In her circle around the block a squirrel jumps out and Sally does not want to hurt the squirrel and swerves jumping a curb damaging the vehicle. Sally is fine but unfortunately the car was damaged. The auto policy you purchased was liability only policy, with no collision coverage. In this scenario the damage would have to be paid out of pocket.
